At a recent City Council meeting, the City’s Information Technology (IT) Department announced the launch of its new Seguin GIS Open Data Portal. This portal, built from scratch by the City’s newly-hired GIS Manager, features a variety of data including maps, infographics, apps and downloadable PDFs. The interactive maps detail capital projects, housing development and city services. Citizens can easily use the city services app on the portal by entering their address to view their council member contact info, zoning, garbage, recycling, and brush zone pickup days. This is only one of many datasets on the portal – more are being added each day. The portal will come in especially useful for residents when weather events occur. In the event of heavy rain and flooding, the GIS portal will allow city staff to keep citizens informed in real time on the status of low water crossings in the city.
